Goddess Dorthea explores a serene life-affirming modern soul with “Godls (Goddess) Love”. The usage of field recordings and other found sounds within the collection helps to imbue it with a truly living, breathing presence about it. A distinct mixture of old-school and nu-school electro flourishes help to drive the whole of the mix. Beats have a crispness to them for they are geometric in terms of their makeup. By far though the true star of the show comes from her commanding, generous voice that swims through the rest of the arrangements, serving as the unifying theme of it all.

Something about the opener “Water (Flow)” makes it feel akin to a long-lost 90s track, for there is a classic sensibility to the careful, steady evolution of the melody. It straddles a mixture of funk, jazz, and EDM in a way that highlights the best of all three genres. Bird song rests on the edge of “Earth (Alive)”, helping to lend it a pastoral beauty. Guitar work has its own low-key grace about it. Keeping things rather simple yet effective is the sundrenched and aptly named “Air (Light)” where the piano adds punctuation to the power of her words. On “Fire (Power)” the addictiveness of the groove stuns, as there’s a contemplation to the piece which closes things off on a high note.

Everything about Goddess Dorthea’s “Godls (Goddess) Love” has a beguiling introspective flavor to it, one that focuses upon the self, the meditation, and the need for self-improvement of oneself.
