Faith, self-discovery and improvement blooms on Goddess Dorthea’s pure optimism of “Soul Full of Sunshine”. Everything about it has its own respect about it, from the uncanny guitar work to the restrained beat8s that are peppered throughout. Her lyrics prove to be of the essence of the album, the very core from which all else grows. By allowing this to come together in a singular, clear-eyed fashion hers is a sound that touches the very heart of the matter.

The modern take on R&B recalls some of Thundercat’s soulful odes. Employing a similar sense of classic and futuristic cadences, the two elements intertwine to become one. Nods to Brainfeeder Records’ own spirited output, of particular note Flying Lotus, also emerge on throughout the whole of the experience. Her voice has a true uniqueness to it, drawing from gospel’s deeply entrenched and rich history. Nor does she overwhelm – she knows exactly when to pull back, helping to give the whole sound an ebb and flow about it. Perhaps her Detroit roots, the original home of Motown Records, help to inform much of the sound.

“Patience Is Grace” sets the entire journey up with a sense of purpose for it evolves and grows in a way that feels so natural. With “Rooted & Grounded” the acoustic guitar licks gives the song an ancient sound, working alongside the trap beats to create something that has such passion to it. The swirling, shoegaze-like emphasis of “Manifest Your Dream” has a dazed, hazy quality to it, one full of hope. “My Attitude Gratitude” changes the emotional tenor of the sound multiple times, resulting in something that feels pitch perfect. “Spiritual Love” incorporates a bit of Neon Indian’s 80s pop aesthetic. On “Let It Go” the song has a prettiness to it, for there is an airiness to all of it. The “Step On Faith” features delightful flourishes, as the song unfurls in its own way. Ending the album on a thought-provoking note is the affirmational “I’m A Goddess”.

“Soul Full of Sunshine” revels in Goddess Dorthea’s boundless joy and sense of purpose, one that has an inspirational ode about it.
